How to Find Your Lane
The internet promises you can be anything online: an influencer, an artist, a thought leader, a content “machine“.And while that sounds exciting at first… “anything” quickly turns into “everything.”
Before you know it, you’re:
Posting in five different directions.
Copying every trend you see.
Chasing what’s “working” for someone else.
The truth is, not every creator is meant to play the same game. And until you figure out which kind of creator you actually are, you’ll waste time, energy, and creativity trying to be something you’re not.
In this post, I’ll break down the three core archetypes of online creators so you can find your lane, stop guessing, and start building with clarity.

The Educator lives for those “aha” moments. They create content that:
Solves problems.
Answers questions.
Simplifies the complicated.
If you’re an Educator, your audience trusts you because you give them results. You turn confusion into clarity and make hard things feel simple.
Think: Ali Abdaal, Vanessa Lau, Graham Stephan. Different industries, same skill. teaching in a way people actually want to learn.
The challenge?
Educators often get stuck in “lecture mode.” Share too many facts without any story, and people may respect you… but not stick around.
Your growth lever:
Make it personal. Teach through your own journey, not just the textbook.
The Entertainer is the internet’s spark plug. They’re magnetic! Pulling you in with energy, humor, or drama.
An Entertainer might be:
Funny and unpredictable.
Over-the-top and bold.
Or just have that “I could watch them talk about anything” vibe.
Think: Emma Chamberlain, Kallmekris, MrBeast. You’re not there for the topic — you’re there for them.
The upside?
Entertainers can grow fast. They build emotional connection almost instantly.
The downside?
Always being “on” is exhausting. What makes you lovable also drains the most energy.
Your growth lever:
Protect your energy. Choose formats and posting styles you can sustain long-term.
The Artist creates because they have to. It’s an expression, a craft, a vision. Artists might be:
Photographers.
Designers.
Writers.
Filmmakers.
Musicians.
Painters.
Their superpower? Depth. Their work stops people mid-scroll because it’s intentional and emotionally charged.
Think: Peter McKinnon, Nathaniel Drew, Rupi Kaur. They earn loyal audiences because their work means something.
The challenge?
Artists often resist marketing themselves, hoping the work will “speak for itself.” But in today’s noisy online world, distribution matters.
Your growth lever:
Treat how you share your work as part of the art itself. The way you package it is an extension of the creation.
Why You Shouldn’t Be All Three at Once
Here’s where most people get stuck: they try to be Educator, Entertainer, and Artist. All at the same time. It’s tempting, right? You see the success of each type and think, If I just combine them all, I’ll grow faster. In reality, you end up diluting what makes you magnetic in the first place.
Instead:
Pick your primary lane.
Borrow strategically from the others to keep your content dynamic.
Example:
Educator → sprinkle in entertainment so people enjoy learning from you.
Entertainer → weave in educational takeaways so people get value while watching.
Artist → use storytelling to invite people behind the scenes.
Find Your Lane
Look back at your last 10 posts and ask:
Which felt easiest to create?
Which got the best response from your audience?
Which made you feel energized instead of drained?
Those answers will point to your natural lane.
Once you see the pattern:
Lean into it.
Build for it.
Double down on the type of content you could make for years without burning out.
You don’t have to be everything online. You just have to be clear. Clarity beats confusion. Depth beats dabbling. Pick your lane. Own it. And watch how much easier it becomes to grow when you finally know where you’re driving.
💡 Pro Tip: Bookmark this post and revisit it every few months! Your lane might shift as you evolve. That’s normal. The key is to always create from your strengths, not from what’s trending.
